“Time is precious. Waste it wisely”

“Time is precious. Waste it wisely” is a saying that has been printed on many images. This is a variation of, “Time is previous. Spend it wisely.”

“Consumers should soon see some marketing material for Shockwave.com, which will use the taglines ‘Remember Recess!’ and ‘Time is precious; waste it wisely’” was printed in the National Post (Don Mills, ON) on June 4, 1999. “Time is precious. Waste it wisely” was posted on the newsgroup rec.skydiving on October 21, 1999. “Time is precious; waste it wisely!” was posted on the newsgroup misc.news.internet.discuss on August 20, 2000.

“Time is precious. Waste it wisely” was used in the novel Slow Burn (2015) by K. Bromberg. This is often credited—incorrectly—as the origin of the saying.

I angle my head to look at him and wonder how Lex’s motto that we’ve adopted as ours holds any relevance when it seems we have all the time in the world now. “Time is precious. Waste it wisely,” I tell him, a ghost of a smile on my lips at how that advice in the voice mail she let me—that I still listen to—has come full circle in this moment.
