“Time’s fun when you’re having flies, Kermit said”

“Time flies when you’re having fun” is an old saying. “Time’s fun when you’re having flies, Kermit (the frog) said” is a jocular saying that has been printed on many images.

“‘Time’s fun when you’re having flies…’ - Kermit the Frog” was posted on the newsgroup rec.music.country.western on February 28, 1994. “Time’s fun when you’re having flies, Kermit said” was posted on Reddit—Oneliners on January 19, 2020.

“What did one frog say to the other?”/“Time’s sure fun when you’re having flies” is another version of the joke that dates to the 1970s.

Wikipedia: Kermit the Frog
Kermit the Frog is a Muppet character and Jim Henson’s best-known creation. Introduced in 1955, Kermit serves as the straight man protagonist of numerous Muppet productions, most notably Sesame Street and The Muppet Show

Muppet Babies and occasionally in other animation projects, and is voiced by Matt Danner in the 2018 reboot of Muppet Babies.

Source for “Time’s fun when you’re having flies”?
Joel Polowin

The one-line joke “Time’s fun when you’re having flies” is commonly attributed to Kermit, but I haven’t been able to determine a source for it.  The earliest use of the phrase that I can find on the net is dated August 10, 1985; the first message in which the phrase is attributed to Kermit is dated December 10, 1993.  Does Kermit actually use the line in any of the shows/movies/whatever? (I’m curious because I just wrote a filk song about Kermit, and included the phrase in the chorus.  If you’d like to see it, the song is at http://www3.sympatico.ca/jpolowin/filkstuf/flies.htm .)
