“To teach kids about democracy, I let them vote on dinner” (joke)

Many American citizens believe that their presidential votes do not count unless they live in a “swing state”—that is, a contested state and one that is not a sure thing for Democrats or Republicans. A joke was posted on Twitter by James Breakwell on July 16, 2016:

“To teach my kids about democracy, I let them vote on dinner. They picked pizza. Then I made tacos because they don’t live in a swing state.”

Wikipedia: Swing state
In American politics, the term swing state refers to any state that could reasonably be won by either the Democratic or Republican presidential candidate. These states are usually targeted by both major-party campaigns, especially in competitive elections. Meanwhile, the states that regularly lean to a single party are known as safe states, as it is generally assumed that one candidate has a base of support from which they can draw a sufficient share of the electorate.

A father wants to teach his children about democracy

A father wants to teach his children about democracy, so he lets them vote on whether they’ll have pizza or hamburgers for dinner. Then he makes tacos because they don’t live in a swing state.
