“Tolerance will reach such a level that intelligent people will be banned from thinking…”

"Tolerance will reach such a level that intelligent people banned from thinking so as not to offend the imbeciles” is a saying that has been printed on many images.

“Tolerance will reach such a level that intelligent people banned from thinking so as not to offend the imbeciles” (shown with a painting of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky) was posted on Free Earth Memes on September 27, 2018. “La tolérance atteindra un tel niveau que les personnes intelligentes seront interdites de toute réflexion afin de pas offenser les imbéciles. Fiodor Mikhaïlovitch Dostoïevski” (“Tolerance will reach such a level that intelligent people will be banned from thinking so as not to offend fools. Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky") was posted on Twitter by Philosophie socialiste on June 25, 2021. Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) never said it.

Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940) wrote the novella Heart of a Dog (1925), and this was made into a 1988 movie. Neither the book nor the movie contains this quotation, but it was shown on memes with characters from the movie in 2019. “Кажется, скоро толерантность дойдет до того, что запретят думать, потому что это оскорбляет чувства тупых” ("It seems that soon tolerance will reach the point where it is forbidden to think, because it offends the feelings of stupid people") was posted on Twitter by Акыл Осмонов on September 4, 2019. “‘Izgleda da ce uskoro tolerancija da stigne do tog nivoa da ce pametnima biti zabranjeno da razmisljaju, zato sto to ponizava osecanja glupih. ‘ Bulgakov ‘Pasje srce’ (“‘It seems that tolerance will soon reach such a level that smart people will be forbidden to think, because it humiliates the feelings of fools’ Bulgakov ‘Heart of a Dog’") was posted on Twitter by zMaja on December 13, 2019.

“We live in a time where smart people are silenced so that stupid people won’t be offended” is a similar saying. “Censorship is telling a man he can’t have a steak just because a baby can’t chew it” is a related saying.

Wikipedia: Fyodor Dostoevsky
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (UK: /ˌdɒstɔɪˈɛfski/, US: /ˌdɒstəˈjɛfski, ˌdʌs-/; Russian: Фёдор Михайлович Достоевский, tr. Fyódor Mikháylovich Dostoyévskiy, IPA: [ˈfʲɵdər mʲɪˈxajləvʲɪdʑ dəstɐˈjefskʲɪj]; 11 November 1821 – 9 February 1881), sometimes transliterated as Dostoyevsky, was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist, and journalist. Dostoevsky’s literary works explore the human condition in the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmospheres of 19th-century Russia, and engage with a variety of philosophical and religious themes. His most acclaimed novels include Crime and Punishment (1866), The Idiot (1869), Demons (1872), and The Brothers Karamazov (1880)

Wikipedia: Heart of a Dog
Heart of a Dog (Russian: Собачье сердце, romanized: Sobachye serdtse) is a novella by Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov. A biting satire of Bolshevism, it was written in 1925 at the height of the NEP period, when communism appeared to be relaxing in the Soviet Union. It is generally interpreted as an allegory of the Communist revolution and “the revolution’s misguided attempt to radically transform mankind.”

Fact Check: There Is NO Evidence To Attribute Quote About Tolerance To Dostoevsky
Aug 2, 2021 by: Sarah Thompson

Years earlier, a similar set of memes began circulating on Facebook. These have Russian-language text of the quote and carry no attribution. The images paired with the text are movie stills of a character from “Heart of a Dog,” Professor Filipp Filippovich Preobrazhensky, played by the actor Evgeniy Evstigneev. Although these memes resurfaced in the summer of 2021, the original appearance on social media seems to have been in October of 2019. One early instance of this meme is a December 19, 2019, request for help translating the text, which was posted on Reddit. Two Russian speakers who replied, translated it:

«Кажется, скоро толерантность дойдет до того, что умным запретят думать, потому что это оскорбляет чувства тупых»

It seems to me, that soon tolerance will soon lead to clever people being prohibited to think, because it offends the stupid.

Tolerance seems to be arriving soon at the point where the intelligent ones will be forbidden to think, as it will offend the feelings of the ignorant ones

We heard back from the reference specialist, Wasyl Sydorenko, after he reviewed the Natalia Bortko screenplay of the film “Heart of a Dog”. He verified that the phrase, which appears to have taken on a certain idiomatic form in both the Russian and English language, does not appear within the movie and the quote cannot be attributed to either Dostoevsky or Bulgakov.

A Reddit thread from 2019 asked native Russian speakers to translate the quote into English without ever mentioning the famous Russian novelist. In 2021, the quote resurfaced in English and began including the false attribution to Dostoevsky.
