“Too cool for school”

“Too cool for school” is a popular rhyme, meaning that school is too straitlaced for some people. “If you’re hip, you’re just too cool for school!” was printed in Dorothy Kilgallen’s “Voice of Broadway” newspaper column on September 19, 1951.

“You were just too cool for school” is a lyric in the Eagles’ rock song “James Dean” (1975). The “too cool for school” saying became popular in the 1970s, and there were several trademarks in the 1980s.

Lionel Hampton turned down a chance to lecture at a West Coast university on the lexicon of jazz. He told the profs he couldn’t figure out how to define the language of the hipsters without employing other unintelligible terms. (If you’re hip, you’re just too cool for school!)
