A Christmas tree saying has several small variations:

“Trimming the tree with happy hearts, that’s the way the holiday starts.”
“Trimming the tree with happy hearts, that’s the way the holidays start.”
“Trimming the tree with happy hearts, that’s the way Christmas starts.”

“‘Trimming the tree with happy hearts...that’s the way the holidays start’--Author unknown” was cited in a 2006 newspaper.

“Christmas cookies and happy hearts, this is how the holiday starts” is a related holiday saying.
