“Victory is a thousand times sweeter when you’re the underdog”

“Victory is a thousand times sweeter when you’re the underdog” is a saying that has been printed on many images. The line is from the book The Summer I Turned Pretty (2009) by Jenny Han.

Similar underdog expressions existed earlier. “It’s always sweeter when you’re the underdog” was printed in the Minneapolis (MN) Tribune on March 13, 1978. “And it is so much sweeter when you’re the underdog. Nobody expects you to win and you come back and bite them” was printed in the Milwaukee (WI) Journal Sentinel on March 19, 2008.

“I’m loving this year; it is completely different,” Zaugg, a senior forward on the University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team, said after practice earlier this week. “We’re kind of like the underdog.

“And it is so much sweeter when you’re the underdog. Nobody expects you to win and you come back and bite them.”
