“Vodka pays the bills”

“Vodka pays the bills” is a popular industry adage that has been printed on T-shirts. If one wants to have a successful bar, then a good supply of vodka is essential.

“I enjoy higher end wines and spirits but at the end of the day cheap vodka pays the bills” was posted on Twitter on February 22, 2011. “Vodka pays the bills for most companies, but bourbon is a heritage!” was posted on Twitter on October 19, 2013.

The expression became popular in 2014, along with the T-shirt from Cocktail Kingdom. “Just saw a t-shirt, ‘Vodka pays the bills.’ Hilarious” was posted on Twitter on July 16, 2014. Several vodka cocktails were given the name “Vodka Pays the Bills.”

I am the people’s spirit! One third of all liquor sales in the United States are of Vodka. Like a good friend of mine said at Tales of the Cocktail, “Vodka pays the bills.” People stick with the things they know, and people have known me for decades.

If you have chosen a career in the branch of the hospitality business that deals in drinks, you should know that vodka is 32% of American spirit sales. If you don’t enjoy reading stats-packed trade journals, I would point you to Don Lee and the creation of the very true T-shirt “vodka pays the bills.”

There are new cocktails, too, including the spectacularly named Vodka Pays the Bills (vodka, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, pomegranate, and lemon).
