Walmartyr (Walmart + martyr)

The portmanteau word “Walmartyr” or ‘Wal-Martyr” (Walmart + martyr) has had more than one meaning. Walmart (or Wal-Mart) is a chain of retail stores.

The Urban Dictionary defined “Wal-Martyr” on May 1, 2009, as “A business that has gone out of business due to Wal-Mart.” This meaning of “Wal-Martyr” has been cited in print since at least 1994, and a “www.walmartyrs.com” website existed in 2000.

A “Walmartyr” can also mean someone who sacrifices everything to shop at Walmart. “If you sacrifice everything to shop at Walmart, would that make you a Walmartyr??” was posted on Twitter  on May 21, 2011. “Sacrifice your life for consumerism—become a Walmartyr for the sake of lower prices!” was posted on Twitter on February 26, 2012. “Someone who gets crushed to death shopping on Black Friday, aka a Walmartyr” was posted on the website PunGents.com on November 27, 2015.

“I would die for shopping. I’m a Walmartyr” was posted on the website PunGents.com on March 6, 2018.

16 August 1994, Ithaca (NY) Journal, “Frankly, let’s explore the grass-roots perks of Wal-Mart” by Franklin Crawford, pg. 10B, col. 2:
Why hasn’t this savvy Arkansas-based bazillion dollar company thrown some big bucks around here, pulled the grass roots out from under the local Wal-Martyrs, invested in the place?

28 February 2000, Democrat and Chronicle (Rochester, NY), “Executive Summary,” pg. 1F, col. 1:
Wal-Mart workers are keeping up with the union drive via the Internet. You can check out the Wal-Mart drive at http://www.walmartyrs.com.

Wal-Martyr
In this soapy tale of a hapless 17-year-old who gives birth in a Wal-Mart, there are enough subplots to stock the store’s shelves

BY JACK GARNER, STAFF FILM CRITIC
Good storytelling isn’t just what you put in. It’s also what you leave out.

Unfortunately, the writers of Where the Heart Is didn’t leave out a darn thing.

Wal-Martyr
A conservative yuppy soccer mom who whines about having to do the grocery shopping. Her logic somehow withstands the fact that her poor husband works sixty-five hour weeks at a highly stressful job.
