“Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay sounds rad if you don’t know what either of these things are”

“Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay” sounds like surfboarding on some exotic beach, but it is not. It means water torture at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp (a United States military prison located in Cuba).

“Sweet, theyre gonna take us Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay! Sounds like a blast” was posted on Twitter on February 13, 2012. “Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay sounds amazing if you don’t know what either of those are” was posted on Twitter on May 19, 2014.

Wikipedia: Waterboarding
Waterboarding is a form of water torture in which water is poured over a cloth covering the face and breathing passages of an immobilized captive, causing the individual to experience the sensation of drowning. Ordinarily, the water is poured intermittently so as to prevent death during torture, however, if the water is poured uninterruptedly it will lead to death by asphyxia with the sensation of drowning, also called dry drowning. Besides death, waterboarding can cause extreme pain, damage to lungs, brain damage from oxygen deprivation, other physical injuries including broken bones due to struggling against restraints, and lasting psychological damage. Adverse physical consequences can manifest themselves months after the event, while psychological effects can last for years.

Wikipedia: Guantanamo Bay detention camp
The Guantanamo Bay detention camp is a United States military prison located within Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, also referred to as Guantánamo or GTMO (/ˈɡɪtmoʊ/), which is on the coast of Guantánamo Bay in Cuba. Since the inmates have been detained indefinitely without trial and several inmates were allegedly severely tortured, the operations of this camp are considered to be a major breach of human rights by Amnesty International.

The camp was established by President George W. Bush’s administration in 2002 during the War on Terror.

Sometimes, Reddit can be extremely clever. In one of the most upvoted Reddit posts ever, “Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay sounds super rad if you don’t know what either of those things are,” users made witty, heartbreaking jokes about torture at the military prison in Cuba. The title of the post is pretty accurate — “waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay” does sound like a cool water sport on a tropical beach if you live under a rock and have no idea what it actually means.

Guantanamo Bay is infamous for poor conditions and torturing prisoners.
