“We win as a team and we lose as a team” (teamwork adage)

“We win as a team and we lose as a team” is a teamwork adage that has been said by many players and coaches in many team sports. “We win as a team and lose as one” was said in 1961 about a rugby football team in 1961. “When we lose, we lose as a team and when we win, we win as a team” was said in August 1965 by Frank Robinson about a baseball team. “We win as a team and lose as a team” was said in November 1965 by Ray Nitschke (1936-1998) about a football team. The expression is very popular and does not appear to have been influenced by any one particular person.

Pg. XLIII:
One of his greatest insights was that a team must not only win as a team but also lose as a team. Wooden understood that after a loss it would be easy for those players that did not play to feel they were not responsible for the outcome. He made sure that all team members felt a part of everything that happened to the team whether it was good or bad.

“We are a team! There is no ‘I’ in team. There may be an ‘I’ in Willis Tate, but there I no ‘I’ in team. We win as a team, and we lose as a team. We are one team. We think as a team, and we breathe as a team. As a matter of fact, I don’t want you guys to think, anymore. I just want you to do what I say to do, when I tell you to do it. Do you got that?”
