Westoria (west + Astoria)

“Westoria” (west + Astoria) is a name coined in 2017 for west Astoria, Queens—also called “Old Astoria” or “Old Astoria Village”—in the area west of 21st Street, between Astoria Park and Broadway. Natassa Contini,  owner of the cafe and pet supply shop Chateau Le Woof on 14th Street and 30th Avenue, started the neighborhood nickname and sold T-shirts promoting it.

”#westoria” was posted on Twitter by ChateauLeWoof‏  on June 30, 2017. Contini trademarked the name with a first use date of April 20, 2017.

GET TO KNOW FRESCO’S CANTINA – MEXICAN FOOD IN WESTERN ASTORIA
There’s a new Mexican restaurant in western Astoria – Fresco’s Cantina.
by Meg Cotner
In our Fourth of July fireworks roundup, one of our listings was a post-Macy’s fireworks party at Fresco’s Cantina, a new Mexican restaurant in western Astoria (AKA “Westoria”). They occupy the old Bear Restaurant space, which, by the way, was the home to WHA’s second anniversary party. Ah, memories…

‘Westoria’ Is the Newest Neighborhood Nickname for Us To Argue Over

ASTORIA — FiDi. DUMBO. NoLIta.

Westoria?

A neighborhood shop owner has coined a new nickname for the slice of Astoria she calls home as a way to promote business in the lightly trafficked area — and her push is picking up steam.

Natassa Contini,  owner of the cafe and pet supply shop Chateau Le Woof on 14th Street and 30th Avenue, started using the name Westoria to refer to the portion of the neighborhood west of 21st Street, between Astoria Park and Broadway. The boundaries closely coincide with the neighborhood more commonly known as “Old Astoria,” or “Old Astoria Village.”

To boost local businesses, ‘Westoria’ might become the newest neighborhood in Queens

The shop owner first started calling the neighborhood Westoria after trying to describe to customers where exactly in Astoria her business was located. She uses the hashtag #Westoria under posts on Chateau Le Woof’s Instagram and even sells tee shirts with the nickname fixated on the front. The shirts sell for $20 at her store, designed by one of her employees. She told DNA info, “It’s just something fun that I started doing. I don’t want to take anything away from Old Astoria.”

Is ‘Westoria’ Queens’ newest neighborhood?
POSTED 5:58 PM, OCTOBER 3, 2017, BY NARMEEN CHOUDHURY, UPDATED AT 09:50AM, OCTOBER 4, 2017
ASTORIA, Queens — The concept of rebranding neighborhoods is nothing new, but typically it is done by real estate developers and agents to re-introduce certain parts of the city.

In this case, it’s New Yorkers who want a slice of Astoria to get some new attention, so how does “Westoria” sound to you?

“It all started from an Instagram hashtag mistake.  I was promoting West Astoria, Astoria and by accident I typed Westoria,” explained Natassa Contini, owner of Chateau Le Woof in Astoria.

Contini said she stuck with the hashtag error and it took off.  Eventually, customers and other local business owners began using #Westoria.

Old Astoria Shop Owner Coins New Name for the Neighborhood
by Clare Doyle

Richard Khuzami, President of Old Astoria Neighborhood Association, is quoted by DNAinfo the following:  “I don’t mind (Natassa’s actions).  I’m glad that people at least are taking part in where they live, regardless of the name. That shows that they’re proud to be from this area.”. Also, this is an indication of the promising economic prospects for “Old Astoria”. However, to avoid any confusion, Mr. Khuzami and OANA state that the legitimate name of this area is “Old Astoria”, and neither he nor OANA endorse or intend to support any name changes.
