“What do you call a matador who gets trampled? A dor mat”

A pun on the term “matador” (from the sport of bullfighting) was posted on the website PunGents.com on October 29, 2017:

“What do you call a matador who gets trampled? A dor mat.”

Forms of the “matador” pun had been used earlier. “I hope the Matador doesn’t just become a Door Mat” was posted on Twitter on September 26, 2011. “Looks like the matador has been reduced to a door mat” was posted on Twitter on December 14, 2011.

The American television drama House of Cards, on the “Chapter 14” episode that originally aired on February 14, 2014, had the character Frank Underwood (played by the actor Kevin Spacey) say:

“There are two types of vice presidents: Door mats and matadors. Which do you think I intend to be?”

Wikipedia: Torero
A matador de toros (lit. “killer of bulls”, from Latin mactator, killer, slayer, from mactare, to slay) is considered to be both an artist and an athlete, possessing great agility, grace, and co-ordination. One of the most famous matadors was Juan Belmonte (1892–1962), whose technique in the ring revolutionized bullfighting and remains an established standard by which a great deal of bullfighters are judged. The style and bravery of the matador is regarded as being, at least, equally important as to whether or not he actually kills the bull. The most successful matadores used to be treated like pop stars, with matching financial incomes, cult followings and accompanied by lurid tabloid stories about their romantic conquests with women.

By Hannah B.May 15, 2014
The new season of House of Cards was released on Valentine’s Day, marking the return of the duplicitous Frank Underwood on his quest for power. In the first episode of the new season, after assuming the vice presidency, Frank states:

“There are two types of vice presidents: Door mats and matadors. Which do you think I intend to be?”
