“What is a room full of sauerkraut?”/“Over-krauted.”

“Sauerkraut” gave the word “kraut” (for “German”). “Overkrauted”—like “overcrowded”—can mean too many Germans or too much sauerkraut.

Why the hot dog vendors need more room—THEY’RE OVERKRAUTED” was printed in the Leader-Times (Kittanning, PA) on January 3, 1975. “Why did the hot dogs need more room? They were over-krauted” was printed in the Edmonton (Alberta) Journal on November 1, 1979.

“What’s a room full of saurkraut? Over-krauted” is a riddle that was posted on Reddit—Jokes in 2015 and on Twitter by Jimmy RevJim Olsen on November 10, 2020.

Wikipedia: Sauerkraut
Sauerkraut (/ˈsaʊ.ərkraʊt/; German: [ˈzaʊɐˌkʁaʊt] (lit. “sour cabbage”) is finely cut raw cabbage that has been fermented by various lactic acid bacteria. It has a long shelf life and a distinctive sour flavor, both of which result from the lactic acid formed when the bacteria ferment the sugars in the cabbage leaves.

Wiktionary: Kraut
Etymology
From German Kraut (“cabbage”), alluding to the use of cabbage as ingredient in German cuisine. From 19th c. but popularized during WWI/II.
Noun

A friend just gave me 12 jars of pickled cabbage. I was going to put it all in the refrigerator but I don’t want the refrigerator to be overkrauted.
