“When a recipe tells you to separate two eggs, how far is acceptable?” (joke)

Some recipes state to separate eggs. “This recipe is certainly silly. It says to separate two eggs, but it doesn’t say how far to separate them” was printed in the book Say Good Night, Gracie!: The Story of George Burns & Gracie Allen (1989) by Cheryl Blythe and Susan Sackett. Gracie Allen (1895-1964) said it on The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, possibly the episode that aired on December 11, 1952.

“I’m following the recipe but nothing seems to happen. It said to separate two eggs, so I did. I put one at this end of the table and the other down there—and nothing happens!” was printed in Decatur (IL) Review on June 9, 1955.
