“Who ate the first pies?”/“The pie oneers.”

“Pie-oneer” (pie + pioneer) is a jocular portmanteau word, usually used to describe a “first” involving a pie. “The old time pastry cooks have organized a pie-oneer organization.—Washington Star” was printed in the Santa Fe (NM) Daily New Mexican on March 24, 1890. “Yes, brothers, we believe that you are ‘pie-oneer Populists,’ for we believe pie is what you are after, and that is O near” was printed in The Caucasian (Raleigh, NC) on February 25, 1897.

“MACK SENNETT…pie-oneer” was printed in the Miami (FL) Herald on March 29, 1953. (Film director Mack Sennett is credited for popularizing the pie-in-the-joke routine in his silent movies.) “Beginning with his first show in 1950, (Soupy—ed.) Sales became one of television’s comedy ‘pie-oneers’” was printed in The Central New Jersey Home News (New Brunswick, New Jersey) on November 8, 1985. “You sir are a pioneer! and a comedian.. youre like the first clown to take a pie to the face.. your a pie-oneer” was posted on Twitter by Aaron on June 27, 2012. “Pie-oneer - Someome who does a pie-related task for the first time e.g. the shop was pie-oneering new #pie flavours via @pierateers” was posted on Twitter by Tippins Pies on June 25, 2014.
