“Why do Americans choose from just two people to run for president and 50 for Miss America?”

“Why do Americans choose from just two people to run for president and 50 for Miss America?” is a jocular one-line saying that has been printed on GIFs. “How come we choose from just two people for president and 50 for Miss America?” was cited in a 2001 newsgroup.

There are actually 52 contestants in the Miss America pageant—50 from the states, plus one each from Puerto Rico and Washington, DC.
