“Why is Europe like a frying pan?”/“Because it has Greece on the bottom.”

The nation of “Greece” is often used as a joke for the word “grease.”

“Why is a map of Turkey-in-Europe like a dripping pan? Because there is Greece at the bottom” was printed in The Waterford News and General Weekly Advertiser (Waterford, Ireland) on December 30, 1853. “WHY is the map of Turkey in Europe, like a frying-pan? Because it has Greece at the bottom” was printed in the book Witty Sayings by Witty People (1878) by William Hardcastle Browne.

“Turkey” is sometimes removed from the joke. “Why is Europe like a frying pan? Because it has Greece at the bottom” was printed in the book The Usborne Book of Silly Jokes (2003) by Laura Howell.
