“Winning without honor, is worse than a resounding defeat”

American author Frank Sonnenberg said both “Winning without honor, is worse than a resounding defeat” and “Winning without honor is worse than a loss.” Sonnenberg wrote on his blog on October 20, 2015:

“People with moral character believe that living with honor trumps anything that can possibly be gained by selling their soul. To them, success isn’t about the fancy titles, luxurious toys, or celebrity status; living with honor offers a truly priceless reward –– inner peace. The alternative, winning without honor, is worse than a resounding defeat.”

Sonnenberg wrote on his blog on April 19, 2016:

“Be positive Winning without honor is worse than a loss. Hold your head up high. Remain calm and level-headed. Tomorrow’s another day.”

“Winning without honor…is worse than a loss” was posted on Twitter by Frank Sonnenberg on June 12, 2016. “Winning without honor, is worse than a resounding defeat” was posted on Twitter by Sonnenberg on November 15, 2016.

The saying probably was used before Sonnenberg popularized it. The blog Captain Critic wrote about the film The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) on July 30, 2009:

“Wynn-Candy objects—his creed is that ‘right is might,’ and that winning without honor is worse than losing—and he tussles with the much younger man.”

Wynn-Candy objects—his creed is that “right is might,” and that winning without honor is worse than losing—and he tussles with the much younger man. The time then shifts to follow Wynn-Candy’s career over the last 40 years.
