“Words have wings, so speak good things”

“Words have wings, so speak good things” is a saying that has been printed on many images. “Words have wings” (or “winged words”) was frequently written by the ancient Greek poet Homer.
 
“Words have wings, so speak good things” was posted to Dave’s ESL Cafe’s Student Discussion Forums on May 4, 2003. AUthorship of the saying is unknown.

After translating Homer for 10 years, I’ve come to believe that winged words connote words of unusual truth, urgency, or import. They usually occur before an action or change of setting, and thus convey the forward motion of the story.
