"Work until your idols becomce your rivals” is an Internet meme that became popular in 2013. Canadian recording artist Drake‘s “Thank Me Now” (2010) contained the lyrics:
“I could relate to kids going straight to the league
When they recognize that you got what it takes to succeed
And that’s around the time that your idols become your rivals”
“Work so hard that your idols become your rivals” was cited on Twitter on April 6, 2013. The saying is popular with sports rookies.
