“You are not experiencing high call volume. You are experiencing low customer service staffing”

Telephone calls to a company’s customer service often receive messages such as “Our phone options have changed” and “We are experiencing high call volume.”

“When is anyone NOT experiencing high call volume?” was posted on Twitter by Jim Van Fleet on August 20, 2008. “When are companies ever NOT experiencing ‘high call volume’? #onHold” was posted on Twitter by Ben Kettle on February 23, 2016. “I wonder if any company with a call holding message is ever not ‘experiencing high call volume’” was posted on Twitter by D Y L ▲ N on December 8, 2016. “Is there ever a time when customer service is not experiencing ‘high call volume’?” was posted on Sickipedia on September 28, 2021.

Many callers believe this is really a staffing problem. “Dear companies everywhere: You are not experiencing ‘high call volume’, you are experiencing ‘low customer service staffing’” was posted on Twitter by Lance M. Brown on September 25, 2009. “You’re not ‘experiencing high call volumes’. You’ve understaffed your contact centre” was posted on Reddit—Britishproblems on September 6, 2018.

“Your phone options have not changed in the last year. Your little trick does not fool me, automated phone system” was posted on Twitter by Chris Rugen on July 18, 2011. “The recent phone options have NOT changed! You just want me to listen to all the automated menu items!” was posted on Twitter by Tony Groff on August 8, 2011. “Is there any company whose phone options haven’t changed?” was posted on Twitter by Greg Camp on January 31, 2017. “Is there ANY Doc offices whose phone options HAVEN’T changed?” was posted on Twitter by Rich Looby on July 18, 2018. “When have the phone options NOT changed? When are they NOT experiencing high call volume?” was posted on Twitter by Rosscott on June 1, 2021.

You’re not ‘experiencing high call volumes’. You’ve understaffed your contact centre.

It’s time to change your recording - “we’re understaffed” is more appropriate.

Rant: You are not experiencing high call volume when every time I call, you say there’s high call volume.
It’s called regular volume, and if it goes up around the certain times of the year, then it’s expected and you hire more people to take those calls. That’s what literally every retail store in existence does around the holidays. Don’t email me about your new board of diversity specialists when you can’t even get your call wait times under 4 hours. Then they call you during the most inopportune time when you can’t answer, only to start the process over again. Is anyone else fed up with this?
