“You can buy education, but wisdom is a gift from God”

“You can buy education, but wisdom is a gift from God” is an inspirational saying that has been printed on many images. “You can buy EDUCATION, but WISDOM is a gift directly from God” was published in the book Wit and Wisdom of Josh Billings (1913), described as “Carefully collected and revised by H. Montague.” “Josh Billings” was the pen name of American humorist Henry Wheeler Shaw (1818-1885).

The saying does not appear in the book The Complete Works of Josh Billings (1876), although “genius iz the gift of God” is mentioned. The “wisdom” saying has not been found before the 1913 book.
