“You can’t give away a used mattress but somehow we’ll pay three hundred bucks a night to sleep on one at a hotel” is a saying that has been printed on many images. Earlier versions of the joke (pre-2022) had lower amounts, such as $100 a night and $200 a night.

The account @kshiffler is no longer on Twitter and the original tweet is no longer available.
 
American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer Jim Gaffigan told the joke in 2012, using $100 a night. “‘you couldn’t give away a used mattress, but we’ll pay $100 to sleep on one for a night’ staying in DC after @JimGaffigan - great show!” was posted on Twitter by Jenny Starks on February 25, 2012. “‘You couldn’t give away a used mattress but we’ll pay $100 to sleep on one for a night.’ - Jim Gaffigan” was posted on Twitter by Aaron Michelson on May 13, 2012. “Jimmy Fallon guest Jim Gaffigan: Hotels. You’re not allowed to give away a used mattress, but you can pay $100 to sleep on one for a night” was posted on Twitter by Strange de Jim on May 24, 2012.
