“You can’t win a championship shooting jumpers” (basketball adage)

It’s a basketball adage that jumpshooting teams (such as teams that rely on three-point shots) do not win championships. A successful basketball team must also have an inside game because outside shooting runs both hot and cold.

“I have yet to see a team win a championship shooting the three-point shot” was cited in print in 1997. “There’s no way you can win a championship shooting three-pointers” was cited in 2002.

Yet, says Buck Williams, “I’d much rather face a team that’s going to set a record for three-point shooting. I have yet to see a team win a championship shooting the three-point shot.”

Neither, apparently, was it the Mavericks’, at least not according to their new guard, recently paroled from Denver. “We shot way too many three-pointers,” Van Exel said. “Eventually, you’re going to have to take the ball to the basket. Teams don’t give you three-pointers; they welcome your three-pointers. There’s no way you can win a championship shooting three-pointers.”

As Charles Barkley often says, you don’t win championships shooting jumpers, much less fade away ones.

“The old adage, ‘You can’t win championships by shooting threes’… I roll my eyes at that one,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said after practice on Sunday.

“You have to make threes to win championships.

“But you’ve got to defend, too. You can’t just be, you know, run and chuck. You’ve got to execute.”
