“You’re fired!” (Donald Trump)
"You're fired!" is that trademark phrase of Donald Trump, the New York City real estate mogul and businessman. The phrase was used on the television show The Apprentice and became viral in January 2004.
Many "You're fired!" trademark applications have been filed, and the early ones are included below. The "You're fired!" (that is, you are no longer employed) phrase is a common one and has been cited in print since at least 1889. If you use "You're fired!" in everyday non-commercial speech, you don't owe Trump any money.

The Apprentice is an American reality television program that judges the business skills of a group of contestants. It has run in various formats across fifteen seasons since January 2004 on NBC.
The Apprentice was created by British-born American television producer Mark Burnett. Billed as "The Ultimate Job Interview," the show features fourteen to eighteen business people who compete over the course of a season, with usually one contestant eliminated per episode.

Losers get to hear Trump say, in effect, "You're fired!" and are shuffled off to "Today" to yak up the series. The final lone winner gets top-dog status at one of Trump's companies for a year. The salary: $250,000, or, let's be real here, chump change to today's corporate royalty.

Trump seeks to trademark 'You're fired!'
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Wendy's asked diners "Where's the beef?" Nike commanded sports nuts to "Just do it." Now Donald Trump is seeking to trademark another pithy phrase: "You're fired!"
The real-estate mogul and reality TV star has filed a trademark application for the phrase, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Web site.
Known for his gaudy casinos and unusual mane of copper hair, Trump dismisses underlings on the hit TV show The Apprentice with a curt "You're fired."
Trump said he intended to emblazon "You're Fired" on games and casino services, and "You're Fired! Donald J. Trump" on clothing.

Trump seeks to trademark 'You're fired!'
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Wendy's asked diners "Where's the beef?" Nike commanded sports nuts to "Just do it." Now Donald Trump is seeking to trademark another pithy phrase: "You're fired!"
The real-estate mogul and reality TV star has filed a trademark application for the phrase, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Web site.
Known for his gaudy casinos and unusual mane of copper hair, Trump dismisses underlings on the hit TV show The Apprentice with a curt "You're fired."
Trump said he intended to emblazon "You're Fired" on games and casino services, and "You're Fired! Donald J. Trump" on clothing.

Donald J. Trump is again gearing up to dismiss the young apprentices on his reality television series with the words ''You're Fired.'' But recently, lawyers from United States Patent and Trademark Office turned down his first attempt to register the expression for games and other playthings.
The reason was that some toys and games using Mr. Trump's boardroom buzzwords, ''You're Fired,'' could be mistaken for ''You're Hired!,'' an educational board game designed to give middle-school students a taste of the job hunt. For years, the children's role-playing contest has held the trademark for the phrase, and the similarities between the marks and the goods of the parties are so great as to create a likelihood of confusion, lawyers from the trademark office said in an initial refusal letter.
Franklin Learning System Inc., a small educational company based in Westport, Conn., registered the federal trademark for the ''You're Hired!'' board game in 1997.
