“You’re only one workout away from a good mood”

“You’re only one workout away from a good mood” is a saying that has been printed on many gift items, such as T-shirts and posters. Valerie Walters, a Los Angeles personal trainer to several Hollywood stars, popularized the saying that has been cited in print since at least 2007. Walters wrote in a web post titled “You Are Just One Workout Away from a Good Mood” on June 26, 2013:

“I don’t remember exactly when this phrase first came to me, but I have used exercise as a psychological reset since I was a teenager.”

Which is probably why Valerie has clients who have stayed with her for years. “I have this belief that you’re only one workout away from a good mood. If you don’t feel like working out, say you’re mad at your boyfriend, you’re depressed, or having a bad day, a workout will change that. Even though you can’t get in shape in one workout, you can absolutely change your state of mind. You may not be able to have every workout be your hardest or your best, but it is consistency over the long haul that gets results.”

WATERS’ TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
“Eat consistently and healthfully, and exercise regularly, but not obsessively,” Waters advises. “Working out should not just be about vanity, but about gaining confidence and esteem. I also believe you’re only one workout away from a good mood. Many times we don’t feel like doing it, but every person feels better when they are done.”

YOU ARE JUST ONE WORKOUT AWAY FROM A GOOD MOOD
Posted by Valerie Waters on Jun 26, 2013
I don’t remember exactly when this phrase first came to me, but I have used exercise as a psychological reset since I was a teenager.

I remember one day in particular, I was about 15 years old and in a terrible mood.

Crying, drama kind of mood. I don’t remember the reason for it, probably some boy I liked didn’t call me back or I had a fight with my mom.

What I do remember, is that I ran it out of me, literally.

I laced up my shoes, stepped outside and started running with tears streaming down my face.
