Zoo Lots Avenue (New Lots Avenue, Brooklyn)

New Lots Avenue in Brooklyn has several connections to the New York City Subway. However, the areas and the stations are so dangerous—especially the elevated station at the intersection of New Lots and Van Sinderen Avenues in Brownsville, Brooklyn—that it’s been nicknamed “Zoo Lots.”

Question about New Lots Avenue (3 Line)
Zman
Posted October 13, 2009
Ok, I’m strongly considering transferring to the IRT for the next pick since I’m on the TSS list and I could use the A Division experience; but, I have a question. The second closest terminal to my house is New Lots Avenue on the (3). The last time I worked there in 1994, T/O’s and C/R’s would be scared to go down to the street after dark, burned out buildings were on every block, cars on concrete blocks were all over the place and gunshots were as common as birds chirping in the trees.

Has the area around New Lots & Livonia turned the corner to the level of respectability, or is it still Zoo Lots: the place that gentrification forgot? I don’t want to park my car there only to have to take the bus home.

One of the sketchiest neighborhoods was Brownsville in Brooklyn. The parking was horrible and had to walk about 4-6 blocks from the school to my truck. I found the key was to blend in with the surroundings. Dark shades, a hoodie pulled tight over your head, ass stomping boots, a pissed off look, and a bad ass walk.

If that doesnt work and they try and engage you just act crazy and say stuff that doesnt make sense, like ooooooooooooogggggggggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa blaaaaaaaaaaaa raaaaaawwwwwwwwrrrrrrr. They wont mess with a “crazy white boy”

Grew up in the city and that’s a bad area…we used to call it “Zoo Lots” because a lot of the crime was around New Lots Avenue

With more than two hours to get to the JFK Airport, I decide it’s time to take the one route to JFK that I’ve never gone before; the 3 to Zoo Lots to the B15 bus.

It was called the “Zoo Lots Express” for all the animals riding the rails.  Hopping over the turnstiles like gazelles.
