Zoombie (Zoom + zombie)

The 2020 coronavirus pandemic caused many people to stay at home and go to work/school remotely—often by using Zoom. A person using Zoom too much was a “Zoombie” or “zoombie” (Zoom + zombie).

“Zoombies everywhere! #HappyHalloween” was posted on Twitter by Zoom on October 30, 2015.  “#Zoombie: a human professional who has been on @zoom_us for over 6 hours a day. Now questions their 3-D existence. Has tried to mute family members IRL. Professionally dressed from the waist up. Soon will be showing their true hair color. Has heard that ‘it’s nice out’” was posted on Twitter by Joanna Dulkin on March 18, 2020.

“Zoombie” was entered in the Urban Dictionary on March 28, 2020.

Just had to do a Zoom call with a new client, which went well, but I hate the whole camera thing and being able to see yourself on screen. I never know where to look so I end up staring sideways like some sort of gormless zombie #Zoombie

You may feel like you have become a “Zoombie,” a term that emerged after my wife spent eight hours in various Zoom meetings a few days ago (for more strategies on how to control your use of technology rather than letting it control you, see my new book Screened In: The Art of Living Free in the Digital Age).

We’ve heard a new phrase that made us smile ‘Zoombie’.
Video call requires more focus and energy. We work harder to process non-verbal cues like facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language. Have you joined the #zoombie apocalypse?
