Zoominar (Zoom + seminar)

The 2020 coronavirus pandemic caused many people to stay at home and go to work/school remotely—often by using Zoom. Many students attended a “Zoominar” or “zoominar” (Zoom + seminar). The term “zoominar” is similar to “webinar.”

“Is it a seminar? A webinar? Or a ZOOMINAR?!  Free social media webinars to zoom your biz into 2011! #sm #smallbiz http://bit.ly/ckgJY6” was posted on Twitter by Pam Moore on October 7, 2010, but this was before Zoom Video Communications, Inc. was started. “Looking forward to this #Zoominar (let’s get that #trending!)” was posted on Twitter by Bill Kelly on March 5, 2019. “Zoom Seminar (Zoominar)” was printed in Inside Higher Ed on April 1, 2019. “Zoominar (zoom+seminar)” was posted on Twitter by MacroPru on March 17, 2020.

“Zoominar” was entered in the Urban Dictionary on May 28, 2020.

Beginning in early 2020, Zoom’s software usage saw a significant global increase following the introduction of quarantine measures adopted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

5 Ideas to Improve Zoom
How might we make the best synchronous learning and virtual meeting platform even better?

5 ideas to improve Zoom:

#1 - Zoom Seminar (Zoominar):
What I’d like is to have the virtual equivalent of sitting around a seminar table. So I’d like to suggest a Zoom display option (beyond Speaker, Thumbnail, and Gallery).  In Seminar, the content (the seminar table) is in the middle of the screen, and the webcam videos would be arrayed around the content in a circle (or an oval).  The center content could be either screen sharing or a shared writing space.  Going around the table would make discussions easier.

Things seem to be moving forward in the Europe. Collective responsibility, solidarity and risk sharing are totally justified. Will we see specific Eurobonds for the virus crisis? https://bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-17/italy-s-conte-calls-for-coronavirus-bonds-to-finance-eu-response?sref=h1U7vkD6

If a seminar given on the web is called “webinar”, is one on @zoom_us called a #zoominar ?
