Oldest Profession (prostitution)

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) wrote in the short story “On the City Wall” (1888):

“Lalun is a member of the most ancient profession in the world.”

In the 1890s, Kipling was being credited for calling prostitution “the oldest profession in the world.” In the 19th century, farming was also known as the “oldest profession.”

Politics has been called (by Ronald Reagan and others) “the world’s second oldest profession.”

VAUXHALL GARDENS.—(...) It must once have been a merry, yet proper place, for the expression, “Ranelagh girl” became common, and, happily, did not mean one who belonged to what has been called the “oldest profession in the world,” but a “lively young lady of excellent principles.”

In Black and White
By Rudyard Kipling
New York, NY: Macmillan and Co.
1895
Pg. 302 (“On the City Wall”):
Lalun is a member of the most ancient profession in the world. Lilith was her very-great-grand-mamma, and that was before the days of Eve, as everyone knows. In the West, people say rude things about Lalun’s profession, and write lectures about it and distribute the lectures to young persons in order that Morality may be preserved. In the East, where the profession is hereditary, descending from mother to daughter, nobody writes lectures or takes any notice; and that is a distinct proof of the inability of the East to manage its own affairs.

MR. ARTHUR SYMONS.—‘Mr. Rudyard Kipling and Mr. Arthur Symons alone seem to sing in the living present, and even the burden of their song is old as any — the glory of the British Army, and the glorification of what Mr. Kipling has called “the oldest profession in the world.”’

THE OLDEST PROFESSION
By Louis Richter
NO DOUBT it happened soon after man learned to walk upright and carry a blub or stone; that he learned he might obtain meat from another hunter in exchange for some favor. This was food for pay, and the beginning of the food industry.

You, who serve food, can feel a pride in being engaged in the world’s oldest profession.
