“Pain is temporary, pride is forever” (sports and exercise adage)

“Pain is temporary, pride is forever” is a popular sports and exercise adage that has been printed on many T-shirts. “Pain is temporary, success is permanent” was a message hung on a cross country team bus in 1987. “Pain is temporary/ Pride is forever” was on a yellow United States Marines T-shirt in 1988. By the early 1990s, the T-shirt saying became popular in many sports.

Road racing cycling champion Lance Armstrong wrote in 2003, “Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever.”

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.
