Branding a neighborhood to attract more tourists

The New York Travel Advisory Bureau just released a map of Manhattan in its effort to brand Lower Manhattan as the “CanDo” (Canal Street Down) district. The map will include graphics and text about museums, theaters and other Downtown recreational spots.
Unlike its six other editions, the new map “has no advertising,” noted N.Y.T.A.B. Chairman Clive Burrow, who spoke about the Can Do initiative at the Lower Manhattan Marketing Association’s board meeting last Thursday morning.
“We want [Downtown] to be a primary destination, not a cast-off destination,” Burrow said. The map, he added, is a “clear, internationally graphic symbol of what we’re talking about.”

Lower Manhattan Marketing Association Says Downtown Is Not Just for Day Trips Anymore
The Lower Manhattan Marketing Association (LOMA) is determined to put the area south of Canal Street on the map—literally. As part of its CanDo initiative (which stands for Canal Downtown), the group is partnering with the New York Travel Advisory Bureau to issue a special edition of their “Map and Guide to Lower Manhattan,” with a blow-up of the area south of Canal Street, that will be distributed to more 150,000 tourists and residents. This is part of CanDo’s larger pushΩ to brand Lower Manhattan as a primary tourist destination, by encouraging local businesses and cultural institutions to plan for this flow of tourists intelligently, and leveraging the growth in visitor traffic to benefit the community.
As Clive Burrow, LOMA’s newly-elected executive chairman explained, “CanDo is a simple packaging of our group of neighborhoods in an easily digestible area, so it becomes a primary rather than a secondary destination.”

To the seemingly endless list of quirky New York neighborhood names - SoHo, BoCoCa, DUMBO - comes yet another: CanDo.
A city marketing group is trying to add some pep to the swath of Manhattan below Canal St. by rebranding it CanDo (pronounced “can due”), short for Canal Downtown.
“The only reason people stay here is if they have business on Wall St. or they’re looking for a cheap room for the weekend,” said Clive Burrow, chairman of the Lower Manhattan Marketing Association.
“By packaging it, by giving it the feel of a neighborhood like SoHo, then you’re giving the whole area a pizzazz.”
