Neptune was the god of freshwater and the sea in Roman religion. Many American restaurants have named their seafood plates the “Neptune Platter” or “Neptune’s Platter.”
“NEPTUNE PLATTER—Half Broiled Lobster, Crabmeat Salad, French Fried Potatoes, Cole Slaw ... $1.50” was printed in the Evening Courier (Camden, NJ) on June 26, 1930. “And if you like sea food, try our King Neptune Platter of good things fresh from the waters!” was printed in the Winona (MN) Republican-Herald on May 13, 1949. The “Neptune Platter” name became popular in the 1950s.
A seafood platter is also sometimes called “Seafood Delight.”
