In 2005 and 2006, incidents of gunfire at the station have caused some to nickname the station "SHOT 97." A New York Daily News story on April 29, 2006 was titled "Fear at (S)Hot 97."
HOT 97 -- The Official #1 Station for Hip Hop and R&B
WQHT, also known as "Hot 97", is a New York City-based radio station at 97.1 FM. Its Mainstream Urban programming places a huge emphasis on Hip-Hop, and it claims to be the United States' premier hip-hop radio station. It signed on the air in the summer of 1986 as Hot 103 (103.5 FM) and then switched to the current frequency.
In the middle of February of 2005 gunfire erupted in front of the offices of Hot 97, between the posses of 50 Cent and The Game. One of the Game's henchmen ended up with a bullet wound in his leg. The station's landlord persuaded Emmis Communications to halt rap artists from visiting the station or to move.
"SHOT 97" CAN'T CATCH GOOD PUBLICITY IF THEY PAID FOR IT
Hot 97 (New York) morning show host Miss Jones recently settled a slander lawsuit for an undisclosed amount shortly before the case reached court.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the suit charges that Jones, then known as Jonesy at Radio One's WPHI (The Beat) in Philadelphia, slandered a nurse on the air. In the suit Sally Brown accuses Jones of mentioning her name on-air and then insulting her and questioning her nursing skills after Brown complained about Jones' on-air tactics.
The episode is reportedly one of several incidents that occurred during Jones' brief stint at WPHI. Jones was also suspended twice during an 18-month-period for insulting a colleague and making allegations about Whitney Houston. Radio One declined to comment on Jones' settlement.
This isn't the first time Jones has landed in hot water for her comments. This past January, Jones was suspended from her current gig at NYC's Hot 97 station after pushing a parody song poking fun at the Southeast Asia Tsunami tragedy.

SOHH reports: mixtape rapper Gravy was shot in the behind outside of the Shot 97 Hot 97 radio station last night. Gravy survived and seems to be doing OK, since he showed up for an interview at Hot 97 afterwards.
Now, this is the third rapper related shooting near the Hot 97 building in the last few years. I love hip-hop and everything, but if I worked in that building I would have asked for a transfer long ago.
Fear at (S)Hot 97
Several tenants at the SoHo building that houses the studios of Hot 97 are backing a pledge by their landlord to evict the embattled radio station in the wake of another rap-related shooting.
"It's a little scary," said Marilyn Seeger, 39, a technician who works in the building at 395 Hudson St. "You keep your eyes open all the time."
Hot 97 was the scene of the 2001 gun battle involving crews tied to diva Lil' Kim and rap duo Capone-N-Noreaga. Bullets flew again last year during a clash between groups aligned with rap superstars 50 Cent and the Game.
Gravy was shot by a jilted hanger-on who was upset because the rapper had refused to let him sit in on the radio interview, police said. No arrests were made and Gravy has refused to cooperate with cops.
