“Head, shoulders, knees and toes” (exercise song)

“Head(s), shoulders, knees and toes” is an exercise song that is common in primary schools. Children touch the parts of their bodies that are mentioned in the song. “Eyes and ears and mouth and nose” is another verse.

It’s not known who first composed the song. “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” was printed in The Children’s Friend for September 1912. “Heads, shoulders, knees and toes” was printed in the Kinston (NC) Free Press on September 27, 1922. “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” was printed in the Allentown (PA) Morning Call on June 1, 1929.

“The adult version of ‘head, shoulders, knees and toes’ is ‘glasses, wallet, keys and phone‘“ and “The adult version of ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’ is now ‘Mask, wallet, keys and phone‘“ are associated sayings.
