“Pancakes = Boneless Waffles” was was posted on Twitter on March 6, 2013. The saying doesn’t make literal sense because neither pancakes nor waffles have any bones. Perhaps the saying was influenced by signs reading “boneless chicken and waffles,” but that refers to “boneless chicken.” More likely is that the grid on waffles resembles “bones.”
“Pancakes are boneless waffles” was posted on Twitter on March 9, 2017. “Pancakes are just boneless waffles” was posted on Twitter on June 29, 2017, and on Reddit—Shower Thoughts on January 25, 2018. “Pancakes are jus boneless waffles that aren’t crispy and don’t have little syrup pockets n you can use pancake batter to make a DAMN WAFFLE” was explained on Twitter on September 4, 2017.
“Waffles are just pancakes with bones” is a related saying. Similar sayings include “A waffle is like a pancake with a syrup trap,” “A waffle is just a more considerate pancake. It’s like, here, let me hold that syrup for you in these convenient boxes” and “Waffles are just pancakes with abs.”
