“Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the bible says love your enemy”

"Love your enemies” is from the New Testament, Matthew 5:44. “People say that whisky is a man’s worst enemy, but the Bible says that we should love our enemies so what is a fellow going to do?” said vaudeville actor Stuart Barnes in 1917.

“Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the bible says love your enemy” has been credited since 2003 to American singer and actor Frank Sinatra (1915-1998), but there’s no evidence that he ever said. The same alcohol saying was credited in 2004 to Bob Welk.
