“I don’t always go the extra mile, but when I do it’s because I missed my exit”

To “go the extra mile” is an idiom meaning to give an extra effort. “Extra mile” usually is not meant literally, but there are jokes.

“I don’t always go the extra mile, but when I do it’s because I missed my exit” (or “We always go the extra mile because we missed the last exit”) has been printed on many images. One image involves “The Most Interesting Man in the World” advertisements, a parody of, “I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I drink Dos Equis.”

“Driving down the highway one day, I saw this slogan on the back of a well-known trucking company’s vehicle: ‘We always go the extra mile.’ Then I noticed another phrase scrawled in the dirt just below it: “That’s because we missed the last exit’” was printed in i>The Record (Kitchener, ON) on March 12, 2005. “I don’t always go the extra mile but when I do it’s probably because I missed the exit” was posted on Twitter by Clint Tolle on February 10, 2018. “I don’t always go the extra mile but when I do, it’s because I missed my exit” was posted on Twitter by Keith Pace on October 3, 2019.
