“Most Americans think the Federal Reserve is a national park”

The “Federal Reserve” (“the Fed”) is the central banking system of the United States. It should not be confused with a “national reserve” (a national park), but the joke is that some people do confuse the two.

“‘Oh yeah?’ Obama shot back, ‘well yo mama’s so fiscally incompetent she thinks the Federal Reserve is a national park’” was posted on Twitter by Enough Harper on July 21, 2011. “And that’s why for most Americans the ‘federal reserve’ is a national park” was posted on Twitter by zerohedge on September 15, 2015. “around 70% of Americans think the Federal Reserve is a national park” was posted on Twitter by #WeDoNotConsent on April 10, 2016. “30% of Americans think the Federal Reserve is a national park” was posted on Twitter by Clive Dunn on September 21, 2017. “I saw this meme. (...) Most Americans think the Federal Reserve is a national park” was said in a YouTube video by neverlosetruth3 KAFKA on September 29, 2021.

Wikipedia: Federal Reserve
The Federal Reserve System (also known as the Federal Reserve or simply the Fed) is the central banking system of the United States of America. It was created on December 23, 1913, with the enactment of the Federal Reserve Act, after a series of financial panics (particularly the panic of 1907) led to the desire for central control of the monetary system in order to alleviate financial crises. Over the years, events such as the Great Depression in the 1930s and the Great Recession during the 2000s have led to the expansion of the roles and responsibilities of the Federal Reserve System.

Wikipedia: List of areas in the United States National Park System
National reserves
National reserves are partnerships between federal, state, and local authorities. Within the boundaries of the three national reserves are combinations of federal land (Park Service or National Wildlife Refuges), state parks and forests, local public lands, and private properties. Two national reserves are currently managed as official units.

My favorite example of how informationally toxic YouTube’s algorithm is this:
Imagine you’re high school freshman and got a school assignment about the Federal Reserve.

I’ve said this before but why would the people recognize the Fed as the root of all problems when most of them think the Federal Reserve is a National park?  The media isn’t going to help.

Too generous imo. The average person doesn’t know what inflation means. And 15% of Americans think that Federal Reserve is a national park.

Macroeconomists: Since rational expectations is second nature to us, it’s easy to forget that the average person probably just fits an ARMA model to predict next year’s inflation.
