“Too cool for school”

"Too cool for school” is a popular rhyme, meaning that school is too straitlaced for some people. “If you’re hip, you’re just too cool for school!” was printed in Dorothy Kilgallen’s “Voice of Broadway” newspaper column on September 19, 1951.

“You were just too cool for school” is a lyric in the Eagles’ rock song “James Dean” (1975). The “too cool for school” saying became popular in the 1970s, and there were several trademarks in the 1980s.

19 September 1951, Indianapolis (IN) News, “Voice of Broadway” by Dorothy Kilgallen, pg. 34, col. 7:
Lionel Hampton turned down a chance to lecture at a West Coast university on the lexicon of jazz. He told the profs he couldn’t figure out how to define the language of the hipsters without employing other unintelligible terms. (If you’re hip, you’re just too cool for school!)

27 October 1970. The Morning Call (Allentown, PA), pg. 9, col. 4:
Too Cool for School
BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP)—A Saudi Arabian government order prohibits girls in miniskirts and boys with long hair from attending school classes.

23 May 1975, Evening Journal (Wilmington, DE), “Rock, and all that,” sec. 2, pg. 31, col. 8:
The clincher is the lyrics, with phrases like, “You were just too cool for school.”
(The rock song “James Dean” by the Eagles.—ed.)

23 November 1977, Seattle (WA) Times, “Their education was several degrees below” by Sally Temple, pg. D4, col. 5:
SOUTH CENTRAL—About 200 Foster High School students found it “too cool for school” Monday morning, so they made signs saying so and took their grievance up the street to the superintendent’s office.

30 August 1979, Honolulu (HI) Advertiser, “Back to school, sort of,” pg. A18, col. 4:
A rewrite of the old song, “School Days,” seems called for:

Truant days, truant days
We’re too cool for school days.
