“What is a brothel? Is it a soup factory?”

Many people get confused between the words “broth” and “brothel.” Is a brothel a soup factory?

An exchange in the movie The House Bunny (2008) is:

Mrs. Hagstrom: [about the college] This is not a brothel.
Shelley: Oh, I’m not looking to make soup.

“Recalling the time i thought ‘brothel’ was another name for a soup factory. oh dear” was posted on Twitter by Laurina on November 5, 2011. “Haha brothel is soup factory haha” was posted on Facebook by Timmy Tom Evans on September 13, 2012. “What is a brothel?? is it a soup factory?” was posted on Twitter by adam on September 3, 2015.

“What do you call a soup factory run by strippers? A brothel” was posted on Reddit—Dadjokes on September 21, 2020.

For the longest time I thought a brothel was some kind of soup factory, for like chicken broth. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

[After our first visit to a brothel]:
Me: “... Yeah…”
Friend: “Right?!”
Me: “I… I take it back…”
Friend: “I told you so many times!”
Me: “Yeah, definitely not a soup factory—”
Friend: “DEFINITELY NOT A SOUP FACTORY!”

I thought a brothel was a fancy soup factory. I also though the “No outlet” signs on the road meant I was entering a place with no electricity.
