“Shit happens” is a saying that became popular in the 1980s. “When shit happens, turn it into fertilizer” is an inspirational saying that has been printed on many images. “When life gives you shit, turn it into fertilizer” was posted on Twitter on June 22, 2009.
 
“Shit happens…so turn it into fertilizer as fuel for success” was posted on Twitter on December 29, 2010. “When shit happens, turn it into fertilizer!” was posted on Twitter on June 20, 2011.
 
The YouTube video “When ‘shit’ happens, turn it into fertilizer!!!... Change yourperspective. Change your life!” by Kute Blackson was posed on October 27, 2011.  Author and motivational speaker Kute Blackson is often credited with the saying, although it doesn’t appear that he was the first to say it.
 
“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” is a similar saying.

Shit happens is a common vulgar slang phrase that is used as a simple existential observation that life is full of unpredictable events, either “Así es la vida” or “C’est la vie”. The phrase is an acknowledgment that bad things happen to people seemingly for no particular reason. The phrase was first observed in 1964, but wasn’t used in a print publication until 1983.
