Choup (chowder + soup)

“Choup” (formed from the words “chowder” plus “soup”) was coined by television cook Rachael Ray with her recipe “Harvest Creamy Corn ‘Choup’ with Parsley.” The recipe was published in her magazine, Every Day with Rachael Ray, that was available for sale in August 2007, and the recipe also appeared on her television show, 30 Minute Meals, in October 2007.
“Choup” hasn’t had much currency since that recipe. Another “Rachael Ray-ism” is “stoup” (stew + soup).

Rachael Domenica Ray (born August 25, 1968 in Glens Falls, New York) is a television personality and author. She hosts the syndicated talk/lifestyle program Rachael Ray and two Food Network series, 30 Minute Meals and Rachael Ray’s Tasty Travels. Ray has also written a series of cookbooks based on the 30 Minute Meals concept, and launched a magazine, Every Day with Rachael Ray, in 2006.
Prior to the launch of her talk show, Ray hosted two other Food Network shows, $40 a Day and Inside Dish.

Harvest Creamy Corn “Choup” with Parsley

Somewhere between chowder and soup, this is a tasty vegetable Choup
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
4 slices bacon, chopped
1 onion, chopped
4 to 5 large ears corn, scraped from cob or 1 box frozen corn
1 medium or 2 small zucchini, chopped
1 pound small potatoes, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 bay leaf
5 to 6 sprigs fresh thyme
1 teaspoon paprika
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 quart chicken stock
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley, a couple of generous handfuls,
A few dashes hot sauce, to taste
Oyster crackers or white Cheddar popcorn, to pass at table
Heat a medium soup pot over medium-high heat with extra-virgin olive oil. Add bacon to hot oil and cook until crisp at edges. Add onions and corn, zucchini and potatoes and bell pepper as you get them chopped. Also add to the soup pot the bay leaf, thyme sprigs, paprika, and salt and pepper, to taste. Cook for about 7 to 8 minutes to begin to soften the vegetables. Sprinkle flour into the pot, stir and cook 1 minute. Stir in the stock and let it come up to a bubble and thicken up a bit. Then stir in cream, parsley and hot sauce, to taste, and simmer 5 minutes. Season the soup with salt and pepper and serve with crackers or popcorn to float on top.

It’s actually pretty cool that such a well-known chef plays with language like Ray does, and I really have to respect her for not letting the haters ruin her fun. Coin on, Rachael Ray.
I just dislike the words she comes up with. In the episode we watched, she coined the word choup, a blend of chowder and soup. Then she proceeded to say “choup” about fifty times as she made what was (in my lexicon) clearly just soup. I’m sure that for some people, even chowder is just a kind of soup.
Your definitions, like Rachael’s, may vary.

I liked $40 a day and still catch 30 minute meals occasionally, but I haven’t watched her talk show.
I do think her “delish” and “evoo” get a little annoying and the whole “choup” (chowder/soup) thing from last week made me roll my eyes, but overall I like her.
