Crunkcake (crunk/drunk + cupcake)

A “crunkcake” (crunk/drunk + cupcake) is an alcoholic cupcake. “Crunkcake” has been cited in print since at least September 2008, but received popularity when Sabath and Faith Alice Sleeper formed Crunkcakes, first serving them at the Rock & Roll Hotel in Washington, DC.
An alcoholic cupcake has also been called a “cuptail” (cupcake + cocktail), cited in print since at least 2007.

In 1995, Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter were scheming ways to get past the TV censors on Conan’s late night talk show, and they settled on an all-purpose, suitable replacement for the infamous seven dirty swearwords that they couldn’t say on TV: Crunk. The choice to use that word was definitely not random. Ice T just happened to be on the show that night, and he likely fed the word to them beforehand and certainly helped fuel its popularity during the telecast (“That was seriously crunked up, right there.”). But Ice never claimed to have come up with the word—he probably got it from Dirty South rappers, who had been using it for years as a euphemism for getting really crazy and fucked up on marijuana and alcohol (stoned and drunk. Chronic plus Drunk = Crunk). Or maybe crack and drunk. Or coke and drunk. Or maybe just being crazy and drunk. Whatever it is, it means getting really crazy and fucked up.

I have a special place in my heart for crunkcake recipes. Maybe its the lush in me but I love me some alcohol. Please drink responsibly. What better way to “drink” your favorite booze than in a cupcake? You get the taste but not the hangover! Sweet! (Pun intended.)

Serioulsy?!? Crunkcakes?!?!
One of the many blogs that I visit nearly every day is I Heart Cuppycakes. She always has some really interesting cupcakes recipes on her site, and I’ve been dying to try several of them. This past weekend I finally tried two - the first of which was Caramel Appletini Crunkcakes. Crunkcakes because they contain apple vodka.

They’re called Crunkcakes, and they’re loaded with liquor.
How the alcohol makes its way into the cupcakes is also critical—and a method the pair prefer to keep secret. All that they’ll divulge is that it’s added only once the cakes come out of the oven. “It’s an after-baking process,” says Sabath, “and we can’t say much more than that.”
Each cupcake contains about an ounce of liquor, they confess, meaning that consuming one tiny cake is roughly equivalent to tossing back one shot. “One woman told me she had three and she was buzzed,” says Sleeper.

Crunkcakes is a new baking venture started by Sabath and Faith Alice Sleeper. Sabath works in booking at the Rock N Roll Hotel, and Sleeper works at both the Hotel and Dangerously Delicious Pies, a nearby pie shop. While the District is saturated with stores offering cute little baked goods, the duo’s cupcakes offer a little extra: alcohol. A wide selection ranges from to The Dude (pound cake with Kahlua and vodka), Jimmy Buffet (key lime cake infused with Tequila and tequila buttercream) and PBR Cake—a munchy-monster made with, of course, Pabst Blue Ribbon.
