First National Bank of Bumfuck, Egypt (fictional remote bank)

“Bumfuck, Egypt” has been used in American slang since at least 1972 to mean a very remote place. Who knew that the place had a bank?
“The First National Bank of Bumfuck” means a fictional local bank or any bank located anywhere—in contrast to the “Big Four” of Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Wells Fargo. “First Bank of Bumfuck” has been cited in print since at least 2000.

Imagine a local bank, the First Bank of Bumfuck, Murdoch County, Georgia, freezing the accounts of customers for nebulous, unsubstantiated reasons.

If you call the right guy at 1st National Bank of Bumfuck, you might just be able to break into my account and steal my money; how much is that guy getting paid to look out for my interests?

As a drive-through cashier, I run all cards through as credit unless asked, and 99.99% of them work as credit, logo or no. Even the “Farmer’s Bank of Bumfuck, Kansas” ones.

His local Bank of Bumfuck, Idaho, might have to arrange it via head office, but it’s perfectly do-able.

I have been known to tell those folks they can send me a proper payment, or they can wait until my bank statement arrives after I deposit their money order drawn on the Bank of Bumfuk.
