Friendternship (friend + internship)

“Friendternship” (freind + internship) was cited in print in 2010 and “friendterns” was cited in 2012. A “friendternship” is when one friend has another friend work for him or her, allowing the “friendtern” to learn the business.
A “friendternship” was started in the theatre in 2012 and in the restaurant business in 2014.
Wikipedia: Internship
An internship is a method of on-the-job training for white-collar and professional careers. Internships for professional careers are similar in some ways to apprenticeships for trade and vocational jobs, but the lack of standardization and oversight leaves the term open to broad interpretation. Interns may be college or university students, high school students, or post-graduate adults. These positions may be paid or unpaid and are usually temporary.
Generally, an internship consists of an exchange of services for experience between the student and an organization. Students can also use an internship to determine if they have an interest in a particular career, create a network of contacts or gain school credit.

95 Empire at As220
August 12, 2012 ·
Big thanks to Jesse Heffler, who has been helping out this summer as part of our “Friendternship” program (our friends signing on for extended periods to help at the theatre). He’s off to NY and leaves 95 Empire in better shape and spirit because of his work!
...Now imagine me hanging the sign on the front door: “Friendterns inquire within!”
Dispatches from Brian’s New York “friendternship”: we’ve just gotten word that he has finally been promoted from his starting position as bus boy to MANAGER! Here he is looking sharp in his new role. (Photo courtesy of Adam Goldberg.)

Seattle’s Iconic Canlis Salad Lands in New York City
Friday, July 18, 2014, by Khushbu Shah
The iconic Canlis salad, from the essential Seattle restaurant by the same name, will be available in New York City for a limited period of time. According to Grub Street, the salad will available at the NoMad Bar starting July 21, for two weeks and will cost $14. Restaurateur Brian Canlis has been working at the NoMad Bar since it opened last month as part of a “friendternship” with NoMad’s Will Guidara, and GS notes the special menu item will act as a “send off” as Canlis wraps up his NYC stint.
