“How come ‘you’re a peach’ is a compliment but ‘you’re bananas’ is an insult?” That’s a good question. Peaches are soft and fuzzy. A woman might have a “peaches and cream” complexion. She’s “a peach.” (Men usually are not.) A banana peel is something you slip on. Monkeys love bananas, and have “monkey business” and “a barrel of monkeys.” A banana is shaped like the male sex organ. Perhaps those are some of the reasons the “peach” means “fine” and “bananas” means “crazy.”
