“I like my coffee how I like my friends. Strong and slightly bitter”

“I like my women like I like my coffee” is a meme that has been used on many images. “A Negro comedian pulled this one: ‘I like my coffee strong and black—the same way I like my women’” was cited in the New York (NY) Amsterdam News in July 1944. “Hot..and black, too” was an answer in 1973. “Hot and sweet” was cited in 1974. “Hot, sweet and black” was cited in 1994.

“I was looking for a gift card and I found one that said on the front. ‘I like my friends the same way I like my coffee.’ On the inside it said, ‘Strong and slightly bitter.’ I can’t help but think of a few friends that would like a card like that….maybe” was posted on Twitter by Matty M. (Valkian) on May 21, 2021. It is possible that the saying originated with this gift card.
