“I’m retired. Every day is Saturday”

“I’m retired. Every day is Saturday” is a saying that has been printed on many images. Every Day is Saturday (1934) was the title of a collection of essays from The New Yorker magazine by E. B. WHite (1899-1985).

“When I asked him how he was enjoying retirement, he said, ‘It’s nice. Every day is like Saturday’” was printed in a 1969 newspaper.

When I asked him how he was enjoying retirement, he said, “It’s nice. Every day is like Saturday.”

Summary:
This study explores the effect of the transition to retirement on time use and quality of life, based on data from Statistics Canada’s 1998 General Social Survey on time use. Data are reported separately for men & women. The study population is divided into several distinct groups: employed full time, employed part time, retired, and (for women) keeping house. Comparative data are presented & discussed for the two groups’ use of time (mean hours per day overall and by day of the week) in four categories of activities: paid work, unpaid work, self-care, and leisure. The study also presents results of responses to survey questions related to time stress, measures of well-being, satisfaction with life, generalized stress, and measures of time poverty or surplus.
